The Winnetka Public Schools Mathematics Committee has developed a mathematics curriculum guide in the spirit of the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). Our curriculum is contemporary, cohesive, and challenging. In order to ensure that students are prepared for a world in which the uses and applications of mathematics are ever increasing, they must know more and different mathematics and become proficient mathematical problem solvers. Mathematics is approached multi-dimensionally. Children learn how to think mathematically and use mathematics effectively in their lives by:

• problem solving
• reasoning and proof
• communicating
• making connections
• representation

These five inherently interwoven processes (NCTM's Process Standards) foster a spirit of inquiry and intellectual curiosity at all grade levels in every aspect of math and permeate the curriculum so that they guide instruction and assessment and become commonplace in the lives of our students.
