Art promotes the development of a child perceptually, intellectually, creatively, emotionally, and socially. The art program at The Skokie School is designed to allow each student to problem solve in a creative and individual manner, which contributes to the continual growth to a student's self-esteem. Each child experiences art uniquely, using the materials and projects as a form of self-expression.
The fifth grade and sixth grade students have one nine-week session of art during the school year. During this session, students have art everyday, which allows them to continually experience the many different concepts and materials presented to them.

Students in fifth grade review the elements and principles of design through art history, color theory, and art processes. They creatively explore painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media. Papier mache or paris craft is the material used for the sculpture. Projects are often coordinated with curriculum and the fifth grade Extravaganza. The Extravaganza theme varies each year; students always get an in-depth look into a culture's art and people.
The sixth grade students explore painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media. Clay plays an important role in their nine weeks. Students learn different clay techniques and how to apply glazes. Printmaking techniques are varied from quarter to quarter, but all students learn how to use linoleum tools to carve a design out of a soft material that is used as their printing block. Art history is often connected with projects, showing students why and how art has been made over the centuries.
